Understanding Intune's Update Ring Settings: Deferral Period, Deadline, and Grace Period

Have you ever been puzzled by the terms "Deferral Period," "Deadline," and "Grace Period" in Microsoft Intune's update ring settings? I am currently grappling with this confusion. Perhaps my search skills are lacking, but I couldn't find clear explanations on Microsoft Learn or in any consolidated blog posts. Is everyone just winging it with Intune?

My Interpretation

After reviewing official documentation and forming my own understanding, I've compiled the following explanations. Please note: I cannot guarantee the accuracy of this information.

Setting Definition Example and Outcome
Deferral Period for Feature/Quality Updates The number of days after Microsoft releases a new update before it becomes available for installation on devices. Example: If the deferral period is set to 7 days, an update released on December 1 will be available for installation starting December 8.
Deadline for Feature/Quality Updates The number of days after an update is downloaded and pending installation before it is automatically installed. Example: If the deadline is set to 7 days, and the deferral period ends on December 8, the update will be automatically installed on December 15.
Grace Period The number of days after an update is installed and a restart is required before the device automatically restarts to complete the installation. Example: If the grace period is set to 3 days, and the update is installed on December 15, the device will automatically restart on December 18 to apply the update.

Is This Interpretation Correct?

This is my understanding, but does it align with your experiences and practices? If you think any part of this is slightly off, please let me know!
